What The Indy 500 Means To Me

By Patrick Reynolds

Indianapolis, IN- I love my family. There is nothing like the autumn and winter holidays to create special memories each year.

The cooler, crisp, fall air feels good to breathe in on an October morning. Leaves change color and a glorious canvas of yellow and orange drapes the countryside. Halloween decorations and my daughter’s costume selection add the final splashes of color to the scene.

Then trees empty their cargo onto the grass and await the collecting power of rake owners. Family members and friends call, plan, and gather in late November. Thanksgiving, football, and turkey form the backdrop for more family visits and memories.

December brings colder air. Christmas trimmings fill the areas where Halloween decorations stood just two months prior. Living rooms smell like pine and colorfully wrapped presents pile under the tree. Excitement of children counting down the arrival of Santa Claus exemplifies the fun and magic the season can bring. There is nothing like sharing a child’s Christmas excitement.

As a husband and father, I have learned through my family how truly special these Holidays and time together is. They are treasured memories that I’m blessed to have.

Now what the heck does all of this have to do with the Indianapolis 500? Read On!

Alex Zanardi and Chip Ganassi Provide Pre-Indy 500 Emotion

By Patrick Reynolds

Indianapolis, IN- There is an old expression that says “the eyes are the window to the soul.”

From this saying, I have always gathered that if you look into someone’s eyes then you can tell what that person is thinking, feeling, and what emotion is currently capturing the heart.

Chip Ganassi‘s eyes displayed some tearful emotion at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a few days before the 500. Along with current and former members of his Indycar team, Ganassi presented Alex Zanardi with a race winning car from when the group competed in CART.

But this was not just any car. This was the Ganassi Racing machine that made “The Pass.”

The car described made a daring move with Zanardi driving, for the lead on the last lap of the 1996 CART race in Laguna Seca. “The Pass” is well remembered within racing circles. The nickname is all that needs to be said to spark the image of that race’s conclusion. Read On!

Indy Lights Freedom 100 Finish Is One For The Ages

By Patrick Reynolds

Indianapolis, IN- Eleven cars took the green flag for the Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Spectators were skeptical of the quality of racing they would see.

The biggest race of the Indy Lights season, and Indy 500 undercard, turned out to be a tremendous showcase and provided a finish that will be remembered as a classic.

Pole sitter Sage Karam and Carlos Munoz led almost the entire event between the two. Karam jumped to the lead at the start and was followed in a very tight draft by Munoz. Munoz completed a pass for the lead on lap 13 and Karam returned the drafting favor, following very close to an almost stock car style bump drafting distance.

Munoz, who also qualified second for Sunday’s Indy 500, drove a low line protecting the inside of the racetrack. Karam looked outside of Munoz several times throughout the close race. Spectators began to anticipate an exciting finish.

Halfway through the final lap the memorable conclusion began to take shape. Read On!
