The Night the King Came of Age

It was a hot July night in 1958, the 12th to be exact, and the NASCAR boys were at Columbia Speedway on the half-mile dirt track out on highway 321 in Cayce, SC. The Grand National cars had been there in April when Speedy Thompson took home the win, then again in June with Junior Johnson being the victor. They would return again in August with Speedy winning his second race of the year at this track. But, on this night the Convertible series was in town and, as usual for Columbia Speedway, a good crowd was on hand for the most popular pass-time in the midlands during this era. Read On!

Jimmy Mosteller – The Small Man With a Big Cigar

Back in the mid 1920’s, a boy named Jimmy Mosteller was born in the rural part of Roswell, Georgia. He grew up around a farming community, where your friends and neighbors always were willing to help if needed and could be depended on. As a young boy, Jimmy was smart when it came to saving his money, he worked in soda fountains, general stores, on dairy farms, and also helped out by delivering goods and always willing to lend a hand. Before the sport of stock car racing swept him away, he also developed a love for riding horses where he was even a jockey for sometime in the late 40’s. Read On!

Why Have Old-School NASCAR Fans Turned Away

Recent years have certainly seen a decline in interest, attendance, and passion by older NASCAR fans. Those who look for more favorable reasons for the decline in overall attendance and television viewing of recent races would have us believe the economy is the primary factor. Personally I still can't see how the economy would negatively affect television viewing, while I certainly understand how it would affect the already overpriced (my opinion) race tickets. But, it would seem to me that if fans had the interest and not the monetary means to attend, they would instead turn more to the TV. Read On!
